Accessibility

ktog should work for every knitter, however they use a computer or phone. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. ktog partly meets them: most of it does, and the gaps we know about are listed below.
What you can expect
- Everything works with a keyboard, with a clear outline on whatever has focus, and a Skip to content link.
- Buttons, fields, progress bars and pictures have names a screen reader can read out. Errors and changes (like “Saved”) are announced as they happen.
- Light and dark mode, or follow your device. Text and controls are checked for contrast in both.
- You can zoom in as far as you like; ktog never blocks zooming.
- If your device is set to reduce motion, ktog's animations stop.
- On a phone, buttons and controls are at least 44 pixels to tap (the small links at the very bottom of a page, at least 24).
- The row counter has keyboard shortcuts: 1 to 9 add a row to that counter, minus takes one off and U undoes. Taking a row off also has its own button, so nothing needs a long press.
- Pattern text in a PDF can be selected and read out, and the instruction view shows a pattern's rows as plain text.
- Pop-up windows keep focus inside them, close with Escape and put you back where you were.
What doesn't work well yet
- Very narrow screens. ktog is laid out for screens 360 pixels wide and up. Narrower than that (some small phones, or zooming a laptop browser to 400%), a few cards scroll sideways a little.
- Pattern PDFs. A PDF shows as its designer made it. A scanned PDF has no text to read out, and charts are pictures with no description. Where ktog can read a pattern's text, the instruction view gives you its sections and rows as text instead.
- Photos people share. There's no separate place to describe a photo yet. A photo's caption or the note posted with it is used as its description; without one it's read as “Progress photo”.
- Ravelry. Pattern and yarn details and pictures brought in from Ravelry come as Ravelry has them.
How we check
We test every page with automated accessibility checks (axe) in light and dark mode, and check keyboard use, focus and labels as features are built. ktog hasn't had an outside accessibility audit yet.
Tell us what gets in your way
If something in ktog is hard or impossible for you to use, or you need something in another format, email hello@ktog.app. Say which page and what happened. We'll reply within 5 working days, and we'd rather hear about a small annoyance than have you work around it.
